Created in 2003, this painting is one of Zao Wou-Ki’s most intense compositions during that period. On centrestage is this saturated, impenetrable mixture of powerful colours, ranging from red, ochre and amber, under which a brooding of deep blue rises to scene. With its apparent might and internal tension, this image opens a window into the inner precinct of the master’s artistic world.
